MJ is the fun party girl, but much like Brooke is using it as a front. In many ways, she reminds me of Mary Jane Watson from Spider-Man, the comics, not the character played by Kirsten Dunst. I don't hate her, I just don't find her that interesting. Ah Brooke: Far and away the most popular OTH character. I think it's one of the best relationships on the show. I love their friendship even when it gets contentious. Another factor that makes this odd mix make sense is Peyton and Brooke were friends before Peyton's mother's death. That shouldn't work, but Hilarie Burton is such a fantastic actress, she pulls it off. She loves classic rock, starts off as moody, has a deep well of sadness, but is a cheerleader, and friends with the most popular girl in school. Peyton is one of the most interesting and complex characters I've ever seen on TV. Speaking of the rivercourt gang, this is the only episode where Skills has hair. Even though it wasn't the smoothest transitions, I'm glad Jimmy was the one to bring the gun to school and the show didn't have to invent someone from Lucas's friends on the rivercourt. Jimmy Edwards is in the first two episodes and while his personality is the opposite of when we see him next, he still feels like one character. Nathan standing up for Lucas after Lucas misses the shot that ends their season is a beautiful thing. The greatest of their arcs is them truly becoming brothers. When Peyton tells him "Who knew you would switch places?" it cuts like a damn knife. Lucas doesn't want to become Nathan, but despite his best efforts, he ends up succumbing to temptations that came about because he joined the team. Nathan's change, while quick, feels earned. We'll get into their marriage in my season 2 write up. I think a big thing that bugs me about it is the use of the trope where the bad boy changes for the love of good woman. They have good chemistry, but I was never blown away by it. I say this with no shame, I find Naley overrated. And while we're at it, it wasn't until someone pointed out to me that I noticed the kitchen doesn't have a dishwasher. There was a room next to the living room that is there in a few episodes and gone never to be seen again. Lucas's bedroom keeps changing and growing. I don't think I've seen a show that's this effective at using music. The show is so good at tying images to music. Why did the writers have Lucas leave Tree Hill in the finale? Was it just to give him some cliffhanger ending? He's back in the next episode. Keith's fate in season 3 can be traced back directly to this one poor decision. Both were dealing with love interests that didn't return their love. Keith and Deb winding up in bed together felt surprising but inevitable. The way the finale bounces in and out from story to story and flashback to present is clear and feels effortless. The show is really good with structure. There is a certain section of the fandom that hates Lucas, but I think if not for this relationship, they'd write him off completely. Thankfully, the writers never lost sight of this and kept their friendship as one of the central relationships of the series. I think my favorite moment of theirs from season 1 is when they have the big fight before Lucas's coma and Haley's break down when he wakes up. They get along, have arguments and make up, they support each other. Lucas and Haley's relationship is one of the best things about OTH and I'm not the first person to point this out, but it bears repeating that it's refreshing to see a male/female best friendship that doesn't end up with them as a couple at any point.
One tree hill torrent season 1 series#
Nothing else in the series happens if Lucas doesn't join the team. The ramifications of that ONE decision can't be understated.

The inciting incident for the series is Lucas deciding the join the Ravens.

The world feels lived in and pretty grounded for the first season.

The characters that know each other feel like they've known each other for years. the show hits the ground running from the very first episode. These are some thoughts I had about season 1, but not exhaustive: Since I joined this subreddit after I began my rewatch, I didn't write up thoughts from the first two seasons, so here they are.
